The Field Mouse takes flight
The Fox & The Crow
Aesop opens the show
Every one narrated live by Chris Kamau, then danced by Dance Centre Kenya's company.
A summer of song meets a winter of consequences — there's a time to play, and a time to prepare.
A tiny mouse spares nothing to repay a lion's mercy — kindness is never wasted, however small the friend.
Force and gentleness compete to win a traveller's coat — warmth wins where wind only makes him hold on tighter.
A cousin's grand feast turns terrifying — sometimes plain and safe beats rich and afraid.
A drab bird borrows every colour in the forest to win a crown — until the truth gets plucked feather by feather.
Caught by a hungry bat, a clever songbird talks her way free — quick thinking beats sharp claws.
A father and son try to please everyone on the road to market — and end up pleasing no one at all.
The mice have the perfect plan to outwit the cat — if only someone would volunteer to carry it out.
Everyone knows how it ends — but watching the tortoise win it, step by steady step, never gets old.
A little flattery, one proud crow, and a piece of cheese that never makes it home.
A shepherd boy cries wolf once too often — and learns, too late, what honesty is worth.
Aesop's Fables are the classic animal stories behind some of the world's best-known life lessons — a tortoise who wins by staying steady, a shepherd boy who learns what honesty is worth. The dancers on stage are in Dance Centre Kenya's Junior Company, each seven to eleven years old, performing for families and other children to watch and start to appreciate storytelling through dance. Each fable is narrated first, so children know the story before seeing it told through dance.
DCK's Aesop's Fables is a great first ballet for a child to see. The production runs 75 minutes with an intermission so children watching are only expected to sit for about 30 minutes at a time. Watching other children perform also makes it exciting to imagine themselves up there next time.
A veteran of Kenya's entertainment industry, Chris Kamau's career spans theatre, television, film, radio, music and voice work. He trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York and Berklee College of Music in Boston, was a founding member of celebrated a cappella group Five Alive, and has served as chairman of the Kenya Actors Guild. He narrates every fable live before the dancing begins.
🎵 A special pre-show music performance begins at 4:30 PM.
